A Study of Losses

A Study of Losses
Through circus, contemporary magic, and object manipulation, Kompani Giraff creates in A study of losses a universe of its own, where they playfully search for the allure of what has been lost. Four circus performers and a collection of forgotten everyday objects awaken in an atmospheric landscape in which even things themselves carry memories, dreams, and phantom pains.

A Study of Losses  seamlessly weaves together fragments from the German writer Judith Schalansky’s contemporarily resonant essay collection An Inventory of Losses with newly composed music by the American artist Beirut, inspired by experimental pop and Renaissance music. The music, specially composed through a close collaboration between Kompani Giraff and Zach Condon/Beirut plays a central role in the storytelling. Zach Condon’s resonant voice and vertiginous lyrics carry the performance’s existential theme. We are confronted with the burning question: What have I lost, and what am I afraid of losing?

With minimal use of language and through movement and music it inspires its audience to express themselves and challenge the way they think.

About Kompani Giraff:
Kompani Giraff creates visual and unique circus performances with a foundation of poetic narrative and a passion for magic in everyday life situations. With this foundation we seek to explore new ground in contemporary circus and make use of our own different experiences in the performing arts to create truly interdisciplinary works of art.

Kompani Giraff's shows are based on young people's perspectives and the trust in children's ability to absorb complex subjects issues. We explore the seriousness of play with an approach that is both respectful and curious. Our belief is that circus as an art form has a great potential to reach new audience groups by breaking linguistic and cultural barriers.
